“I’m no sociopath. I always know what I’m doing is wrong. I’m just a guy that doesn’t like taking tests, doing work, or getting yelled at. So if you think about it, that makes me the sanest person here.”

I think that a lot of the reason Jarvis has become so human is because Tony treats him like he’s human. Tony talks to Jarvis in a very colloquial way. He says “you up?” when he knows damn well that Jarvis is operational. He says “throw a little hot-rod red in there” instead of “paint components x, y, and z with red paint #20.” Tony treats all his machinery like that—Dummy and You, especially—and Jarvis is no exception.

Jarvis has become much more human since Iron Man 1. He actually displayed emotions in Iron Man 3—specifically when he feared for Tony’s life, his voice sounded terribly frightened, and in instances like the second gif where he said “I need to sleep” and not “My battery is depleted.” Jarvis has grown and changed, as any self-aware creature does. He has become human because he is treated as such.

A little while back I was contacted by the awesome folks over at Soul Pancake to do one of their Art Attack videos! It was such an amazing experience, and definitely a challenge to come up with a painting out of thin air in about four hours. It’s funny, inevitably there are things about this particular painting that I would have changed had I had time to step back from the process of painting it, but I sort of like having this time-capsule of what my initial thought-process is like. It’s certainly enlightening, and I think has helped me to fix some bad painting habits I had developed. Just goes to show you, sometimes you need to see your work through the prism of another medium, in this case, video!

The Soul Pancake crew were wonderful, and I want to give a shout-out to Jacob Menache, Ethan Coco, Gary Haroldson, and the director, Bayan Joonam - you guys ROCK! Also, many thanks to Anabella Casanova for contacting me about this opportunity.

I also did a short interview about what I do, my process, and my thoughts on art and adventure, which can be viewed here!

Action-filled battles, bonding characters, and fantastical backdrops have been Tales’ calling cards. Recently, the franchise hit its benchmark 15th anniversary. With Tales of Xillia on the horizon, we dive deeper into the upcoming release and take a look at the series’ evolution. We had the pleasure of interviewing producer Hideo Baba, who discusses the push to bring more titles to the U.S., the new direction of Tales of Xillia, and how Namco Bandai sustains the Tales legacy.
